Depressurize before you open anything
Most big blue and standard housings built for whole house service include a pressure relief button on the cap, usually a small red button that vents trapped pressure with a hiss when pressed. Press it and hold it before attempting to loosen the sump. Skipping this step on a housing that is still pressurized is how a sump lets go under load rather than under control, which is unpleasant with several gallons of water behind it.
Have a bucket or a towel ready regardless. Even a properly depressurized housing holds the water that was inside the sump, and that water comes out the moment the sump separates from the cap.

Changing the cartridge, in order
- Record the current pressure gauge readings. Note both the inlet and outlet gauge before touching anything, and compare the difference to the baseline recorded when this cartridge was installed.
- Shut off the bypass or isolation valves. Close the valves isolating the housing from the rest of the plumbing, or switch to the bypass position if one exists, so the household is not without water during the change.
- Depressurize with the relief button. Press and hold the pressure relief button on the cap until it stops venting, confirming the housing is no longer under line pressure.
- Have a bucket ready and open the sump. Use the correct wrench for the housing, since an over-tightened sump from the last change is common and a metal wrench handles that better than the plastic one many housings ship with.
- Remove the spent cartridge and inspect the housing. Check the O-ring seat and the sump threads for grit or scale buildup while the housing is open, since this is the easiest access it will have all year.
- Sanitize the housing occasionally. Every few cartridge changes, wash the empty sump with a mild dish soap and rinse thoroughly, or use a dedicated housing sanitizer, especially on a clear housing that has seen any light exposure.
- Lubricate the O-ring lightly and fit the new cartridge. A silicone-based lubricant made for potable water O-rings, applied sparingly, seats the sump cleanly and makes the next change easier.
- Close the sump hand tight plus a quarter turn. Do not over-tighten. A plastic sump cracks under the same torque that a metal wrench can easily deliver, and hand tight plus a quarter turn is enough on a properly seated O-ring.
- Reopen slowly, flush, and record the new baseline. Open the isolation valves slowly, check for leaks at the sump, run a hose bib for a few minutes to clear fines, then record the fresh pressure drop reading as the new baseline for next time.
Clear housings need one more habit
A clear sump makes it easy to see how loaded a sediment cartridge has become, which is genuinely useful, but light passing through that same clear plastic grows biofilm inside the housing over time. Keep a clear housing out of direct sunlight, whether that means a location choice at installation or a simple opaque sleeve or cover afterward, and include it in the occasional sanitizing routine along with every other housing.
