How to get a water test, on city water or a private well
Quick answer
City water customers already have a free annual Consumer Confidence Report from their utility. Well owners have no such report, so a certified laboratory test, generally 150 to 400 dollars depending on the panel, is the only way to know what a well actually contains before buying equipment.

City water: the report already exists and it costs nothing

The report lists every regulated contaminant the utility tested for, the result, and the published limit it is measured against.
The catch is what the report does not cover. It reports contaminant levels measured at the treatment plant or in the distribution system, not at your kitchen tap, and that gap matters most for lead, which behaves differently from everything else on the report. Lead has no maximum contaminant level at all, only an action level of 0.015 mg/L that triggers utility treatment steps rather than describing a safe concentration, and the health goal for lead is zero. Lead enters water from solder, fixtures and service lines inside your own plumbing rather than from the utility main, so a clean Consumer Confidence Report tells you nothing about lead at your own tap. Well water: nobody tests it but you
