What do the water hardness classes actually mean?

The part almost nobody selling a softener says plainly: hardness has no regulatory limit of any kind. Not a maximum contaminant level, not a secondary standard, nothing. Is there an EPA limit for water hardness?

Secondary standards are aesthetic guidelines rather than enforceable health limits, and hardness does not even reach that tier. Marketing that implies a hardness reading is a violation of a federal limit is describing a limit that does not exist.

These are the trade's own working observations rather than a laboratory finding, since nobody publishes a health or performance standard tied to how hardness feels in daily use. They are still genuinely useful for deciding whether softening is worth pursuing at all.
Households commonly start noticing scale and soap complaints once hardness crosses into the hard class, above 7 grains per gallon, well before the very hard boundary.
