What builds up at the bottom of the tank

Every bag of softener salt carries some fraction of insoluble material along with the sodium chloride itself, whether that is mineral sediment in rock salt or a smaller amount in a higher purity evaporated product. As salt dissolves during normal operation, that insoluble fraction is left behind and settles into the bottom of the tank. Over enough cycles it forms a layer of sludge that can partially block the brine well, the tube through which the concentrated solution is drawn during regeneration, and interfere with a safety float that is supposed to rise and fall freely.

Two parts worth checking every time the tank is open

The brine well is the perforated tube standing inside the tank that the softener actually draws concentrated solution through. Sediment settling around its base can restrict flow into the well even when plenty of salt and water sit elsewhere in the tank. The safety float sits inside or beside the well and is designed to shut off the fill valve if the tank starts to overflow during a failed cycle. A float that is stuck or fouled with residue does not do that job, which turns a routine valve malfunction into a flooded utility room instead of a minor inconvenience.

Cleaning a brine tank, in order

  1. Put the softener into bypass. Switch the bypass valve so the house receives untreated water rather than water partway through a cleaning that has interrupted normal operation.
  2. Remove remaining salt and water. Scoop out any remaining salt and bail or siphon out standing water and brine, setting undamaged salt aside if you plan to reuse it.
  3. Lift out the brine well and safety float. Most tanks allow the well and float assembly to lift out for inspection and cleaning separately from the tank itself.
  4. Scrub the tank, the well and the float. Use warm water and a stiff brush to remove sludge from the tank floor, the outside of the brine well, and the float mechanism, checking that the float moves freely once clean.
  5. Rinse thoroughly. Rinse away loosened sediment completely before reassembling, since leftover sludge simply restarts the buildup process from a head start.
  6. Reassemble and refill with fresh salt. Reinstall the brine well and float, then add fresh salt to the normal third to two thirds working range.
  7. Return to service and run a manual regeneration. Switch off bypass and trigger a manual regeneration cycle to confirm brine is drawing correctly before relying on the meter to run the next cycle on its own schedule.
