Every water treatment system in one list
Quick answer
Six complete systems, three for city water and three for well water, from a $233 starter setup to a $6,820 premium well train. Every one of them opens with a water test, because equipment sized for a problem nobody measured is the most expensive mistake in this category.
There are two ladders here rather than one, because city water and well water are genuinely different problems. A city customer has a utility that treats the water to a regulated standard and publishes a report every year. A well owner has none of that, and nobody tests the water but them.
Every list below starts with a test rather than with equipment. That is not a formality: iron filters are specified by the form of the iron and by pH, neutralizers by how far the pH sits below 6.5, ultraviolet by flow and by water clarity. None of it can be chosen from a symptom.
Every system, with its total
Six systems across two ladders, from $233 to $6,820 in equipment.
Rule of thumb Water treatment trade convention rather than a published standard. Taught everywhere, useful for planning, and not a specification. No standards body publishes it.
| System | Water source | Items | Equipment total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | City water | 6 | $233 |
| Complete | City water | 10 | $1,515 |
| Premium | City water | 12 | $2,925 |
| Starter | Well water | 7 | $700 |
| Complete | Well water | 11 | $2,443 |
| Premium | Well water | 16 | $6,820 |
Equipment only. Nothing here includes plumbing labor, a drain line, an electrical outlet where one is needed, or a permit. Installed cost estimating is a different question and it lives on HouseProjectCalc rather than here.
Which ladder is yours
City water. Your utility treats the water to a regulated standard and publishes a Consumer Confidence Report every year at no charge. The usual complaints are hardness, chlorine or chloramine taste, and scale. Start with that report and a hardness strip.
Well water. There is no utility, no annual report and no operator. Nobody tests it but you. The usual problems are iron, manganese, sulfur odor, low pH and sometimes bacteria, and every one of them is specified from a certified laboratory result rather than from a symptom.
Starter City Water Treatment System, $233
6 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, and listed in the order the water actually reaches them. That order is not cosmetic: sediment has to come out before anything finer sees it, oxidation has to happen before a softener, and ultraviolet goes last because it needs the clearest water in the house.
1. Measure it first
$45Both of these cost less than a single filter cartridge and they decide whether the rest of the list is the right list. On city water your utility also publishes a Consumer Confidence Report every year at no charge.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Varify Water Hardness Test Strips Hardness is the one figure you can genuinely read at home in under a minute. | $9.99 | Check price |
| Watersafe Water Testing Kit for Drinking Water, Well and Tap A multi parameter screen. A screen is not a laboratory result, and anything it flags means a certified lab next rather than a purchase. | $34.99 | Check price |
2. Sediment and taste
$162Two stages: sediment first so it does not blind the carbon, then carbon for chlorine taste and odor. That is an NSF/ANSI 42 aesthetic effects job, which is what most city water complaints actually are.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring WGB21B 2 Stage Whole House Water Filtration System, 50,000 Gallons Two stages in one bracket, with a published 50,000 gallon capacity. | $155.99 | Check price |
| Pentair Pentek P5 Sediment Water Filter Cartridge, 10 Inch, 5 Micron A spare sediment cartridge, because the first one will load faster than you expect. | $6.04 | Check price |
3. Know when to change it
$26Pressure drop is the only honest change trigger. A rise of 10 to 15 psi across the housing is the industry change out point, and the calendar is a poor substitute.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Reotemp PD25H Home Water Pressure Test Gauge with Max Pointer, 0 to 160 PSI The max pointer records the highest pressure seen overnight, which catches spikes nobody is awake for. | $12.99 | Check price |
| Pentair Pentek 150578 MC-1A Mounting Bracket Kit A wall bracket so the weight of a full housing does not hang off the plumbing. | $13.22 | Check price |

Complete City Water Treatment System, $1,515
10 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, and listed in the order the water actually reaches them. That order is not cosmetic: sediment has to come out before anything finer sees it, oxidation has to happen before a softener, and ultraviolet goes last because it needs the clearest water in the house.
1. Measure it first
$279A laboratory panel costs a fraction of the equipment below and it is what sizes all of it. It also tells you whether the drinking water stage is addressing anything real.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Score Advanced Home Water Test Kit, Well or City Reported with the regulatory limit alongside each result rather than as a bare number. | $269.00 | Check price |
| Varify Water Hardness Test Strips For checking the softener is still working after it is installed, which nothing else on this list does. | $9.99 | Check price |
2. Sediment and taste, before the softener
$323Filtration goes ahead of the softener so chlorine and particulate do not reach the resin. A chlorine residual oxidizes standard resin and shortens its life measurably.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring WGB22B 2 Stage Whole House Water Filtration System Sediment plus carbon block in the big blue format that actually passes whole house flow. | $286.70 | Check price |
| Pentair Pentek DGD-5005-20 Big Blue Dual Gradient Sediment Filter, 20 Inch A dual gradient cartridge, 50 micron stepping to 5, which is staged filtration inside one cartridge. | $36.12 | Check price |
3. Softening
$665Sized on the measured hardness and household size, not on bathroom count. Run it at an efficient salt setting: the last increment of capacity is bought very expensively in salt.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Aquasure Harmony Series 48,000 Grain Water Softener Metered digital control, so it regenerates on water used rather than on a clock. | $629.99 | Check price |
| Morton Clean and Protect Water Softener Salt Pellets, 40 lb, 2 Pack Salt is almost always cheaper locally. This is here for comparison rather than as a recommendation to ship forty pound bags. | $35.00 | Check price |
4. Drinking water
$180Reverse osmosis is the residential technology for dissolved contaminants, and only where the model carries that certified claim under NSF/ANSI 58. Match the claim to the laboratory result rather than assuming.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| APEC Water ROES-50 5 Stage Under Sink Reverse Osmosis System, 50 GPD Standard sized cartridges available from many suppliers rather than one, which matters at year three. | $179.99 | Check price |
5. Install and monitor
$68The gauge is the diagnostic for everything upstream of it, and the wrench is the part people wish they had bought before a swollen housing refused to open.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Reotemp PD25H Home Water Pressure Test Gauge with Max Pointer, 0 to 160 PSI Fit one either side of the filter housing and note the clean baseline. | $12.99 | Check price |
| Superb Wrench SPBW-2 Heavy Duty Metal Water Filter Wrench Metal rather than the plastic wrench in the box, which cracks when it is actually needed. | $33.96 | Check price |
| SharkBite Max Water Filtration Connection Kit, 3/4 Inch Push to connect fittings, which is what makes this a weekend job rather than a soldering job. | $21.49 | Check price |

Premium City Water Treatment System, $2,925
12 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, and listed in the order the water actually reaches them. That order is not cosmetic: sediment has to come out before anything finer sees it, oxidation has to happen before a softener, and ultraviolet goes last because it needs the clearest water in the house.
1. Measure it properly
$414The wide panel is worth it here because the equipment below is expensive enough that guessing at what it is for is the costly part.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Score Ultimate Home Water Test Kit, 250 Plus Parameters The widest panel available, covering metals and volatile organics a standard panel leaves out. | $399.95 | Check price |
| HM Digital TDS-3 Handheld TDS Meter, 0 to 9990 ppm For confirming the reverse osmosis membrane is still rejecting properly, which nothing else tells you. | $14.50 | Check price |
2. Staged filtration
$521Three housings pre mounted: coarse sediment, then catalytic carbon for chloramine, then granular carbon as a polish. Standard activated carbon handles free chlorine well and chloramine poorly, and that distinction is on your utility report.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Pentair Pentek BBFS-222 Big Blue Three Housing Filtration System, 1 Inch NPT Three big blue housings on one bracket with one inch ports. | $350.75 | Check price |

| Pentair Pentek GAC-BB Big Blue Granular Activated Carbon Filter Granular carbon polish at lower pressure drop than another block. | $69.06 | Check price |
3. High efficiency softening
$1,324Upflow regeneration and a variable reserve that learns the household pattern. The gain is salt and water per year rather than capacity, and it only materialises if the unit is actually programmed to the efficient setting.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| SoftPro Elite Basic High Efficiency 48,000 Grain Water Softener Built around salt efficiency rather than nameplate capacity. | $1,289.00 | Check price |
| Diamond Crystal Bright and Soft Water Softener Salt Pellets, 50 lb Evaporated pellets leave less insoluble residue, so the brine tank needs cleaning out less often. | $34.95 | Check price |
4. Drinking water
$439Tankless reverse osmosis frees the cabinet space a storage tank takes and roughly halves the drain water against a conventional tank system.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Waterdrop G3P600 Tankless Reverse Osmosis System, 600 GPD Produces on demand, so there is no tank air charge to get wrong. | $439.00 | Check price |
5. Protect the appliances and the equipment
$226Sustained high pressure shortens the life of filter housings, reverse osmosis systems and every appliance with a fill valve. A regulator is cheaper than any of them.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| 3M Aqua-Pure AP430SS Whole House Scale Inhibition System Scale inhibition ahead of a tankless heater. This protects the appliance; it does not soften the house. | $129.82 | Check price |
| Cash Acme EB45 Pressure Regulating Valve, 3/4 Inch Worth fitting if your measured pressure is above about 80 psi. | $62.42 | Check price |
| Superb Wrench SPBW-2 Heavy Duty Metal Water Filter Wrench Three housings means three times as many reasons to own a metal wrench. | $33.96 | Check price |

Starter Well Water Treatment System, $700
7 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, and listed in the order the water actually reaches them. That order is not cosmetic: sediment has to come out before anything finer sees it, oxidation has to happen before a softener, and ultraviolet goes last because it needs the clearest water in the house.
1. Test. This is the actual first purchase.
$304A laboratory panel costs a fraction of any single piece of equipment below and it determines all of it. Bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic and PFAS are not do it yourself topics: they are invisible and tasteless, and a positive result means the local health department and usually a professional rather than a filter.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Score Advanced Home Water Test Kit, Well or City A certified laboratory panel reported against the regulatory limits. | $269.00 | Check price |
| Safe Home DIY Bacteria in Water Test Kit A coliform screen with fast results. A screen does not clear a well, and a positive result is a public health matter. | $14.99 | Check price |
| Bartovation Total Dissolved Iron Test Strips, 0 to 10 ppm Reads across the range that decides whether a softener can cope or an iron filter is needed. | $19.99 | Check price |
2. Catch the grit before anything finer sees it
$60A reusable screen flushed with a valve rather than replaced. On a well carrying sand this single part is what stops every cartridge behind it being a consumable.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring WSP-50 Spin Down Sediment Filter, 50 Micron Clear bowl, so sand is visible and can be blown down without opening anything. | $59.99 | Check price |
3. Sediment and taste
$323Staged coarse to fine. Going straight to a fine cartridge on well water plugs it in days, which is the commonest cause of a new filter killing the water pressure.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring WGB22B 2 Stage Whole House Water Filtration System Two stages in the big blue format that passes whole house flow. | $286.70 | Check price |
| Pentair Pentek DGD-5005-20 Big Blue Dual Gradient Sediment Filter, 20 Inch Dual gradient, 50 micron stepping to 5. | $36.12 | Check price |
4. Monitor it
$13On a well the pressure drop across the filter is also an early warning that something upstream has changed, such as a rising sediment load after heavy rain.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Reotemp PD25H Home Water Pressure Test Gauge with Max Pointer, 0 to 160 PSI Note the clean baseline the day it is installed. Every later reading means nothing without it. | $12.99 | Check price |

Complete Well Water Treatment System, $2,443
11 items, grouped by what each one does rather than by what it costs, and listed in the order the water actually reaches them. That order is not cosmetic: sediment has to come out before anything finer sees it, oxidation has to happen before a softener, and ultraviolet goes last because it needs the clearest water in the house.
1. Test. Nothing below is specified without it.
$284Iron form, pH, manganese and hydrogen sulfide together decide which oxidizing media can work. A single iron number is not enough to specify a system.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Score Advanced Home Water Test Kit, Well or City The panel that specifies everything below it. | $269.00 | Check price |
| Safe Home DIY Bacteria in Water Test Kit Decides whether the ultraviolet stage is treating a known problem or an assumed one. | $14.99 | Check price |
2. Sediment, flushable
$65An automatic or manual spin down ahead of everything. On a well this is the cheapest part of the system and it protects the most expensive ones.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring WSP-50SL Spin Down Sediment Filter with Siphon Flush, 50 Micron The siphon scraper clears the screen more completely than a plain blowdown. | $64.99 | Check price |
3. Iron, manganese and sulfur
$810Air injection oxidizes iron against an air pocket drawn on each backwash, with no chemical feed to maintain. It handles hydrogen sulfide as well, which is why it dominates residential well systems.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| DuraWater Air Injection Iron Filter, 1.0 Cubic Foot On the Fleck 5600SXT valve, which is the most widely serviced residential control valve in the country. | $810.00 | Check price |
4. Softening
$860After the iron filter, never before it. Compensate the hardness figure for any remaining dissolved iron before sizing: the trade adds roughly 3 to 5 grains per gallon per ppm.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| DuraWater Fleck 5600SXT 48,000 Grain Water Softener The same serviceable valve family as the iron filter, so one set of parts knowledge covers both. | $805.00 | Check price |
| Diamond Crystal Bright and Soft Water Softener Salt Pellets, 50 lb Higher purity pellets leave less residue in the brine tank. | $34.95 | Check price |
| Morton Water Softener Cleanser Resin cleaner as routine maintenance. On any well carrying iron this is what extends resin life, and almost nobody does it. | $20.38 | Check price |
5. Ultraviolet, last
$300Needs the clearest water in the house. NSF/ANSI 55 Class A delivers 40 mJ/cm2 and is for water not known to be safe; Class B delivers only 16 and is supplemental. The two look almost identical on a listing.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring UVF55FS Whole House UV Water Filter, 12 GPM, 1 Inch Ports A flow sensor so the lamp runs only when water moves. Size it on peak flow, because dose falls in proportion as flow rises. | $299.99 | Check price |
6. Polish and monitor
$124A final cartridge stage after oxidation catches the iron particles the filter bed releases, and the gauges tell you when anything upstream has changed.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Pentair Pentek 150233 Big Blue Filter Housing, 1 Inch NPT, 20 Inch A one inch big blue housing for the final polish stage. | $68.15 | Check price |
| Pentair Pentek DGD-2501-20 Big Blue Dual Gradient Sediment Filter, 20 Inch 25 micron stepping to 1, which is the right rating once the coarse work is already done. | $42.48 | Check price |

That order is not cosmetic: sediment has to come out before anything finer sees it, oxidation has to happen before a softener, and ultraviolet goes last because it needs the clearest water in the house.
1. A full laboratory panel
$415At this cost the panel is rounding error and guessing is the expensive part. pH, iron form, manganese, hydrogen sulfide, hardness and bacteria together specify the train.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| Tap Score Ultimate Home Water Test Kit, 250 Plus Parameters The widest panel available here, which is appropriate when several problems are suspected at once. | $399.95 | Check price |
| Safe Home DIY Bacteria in Water Test Kit Repeat testing after any well work, not just once at the start. | $14.99 | Check price |
2. Sediment, automatic
$230Flushes itself on a timer, which removes the one maintenance step people forget until the pressure drops.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| iSpring WSP50ARB Auto Flush Spin Down Sediment Filter, 50 Micron Automatic flush, which needs a drain line. | $229.99 | Check price |
3. Acid neutralization, first in the treatment train
$807Corrosive water below pH 6.5 dissolves plumbing and shows as blue green staining and pinhole leaks rather than as a taste. It is also a lead question wherever old solder or brass is possible, and that is a test at the tap rather than a product decision.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| AFWFilters Acid Neutralizer for Well Water, Calcite A backwashing calcite bed. It raises pH by dissolving calcium carbonate, which means it ADDS hardness as it works. | $699.00 | Check price |
| Nelsen Calcite Filter Media, 0.55 Cubic Foot Calcite is a genuine consumable here: the bed literally dissolves away and needs topping up. | $107.99 | Check price |
4. Iron, manganese and sulfur, at scale
$1,909A larger media bed for a higher measured load than the entry units are rated to handle.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| AFWFilters Air Injection Platinum Iron, Sulfur and Manganese System, 1.5 Cubic Foot The largest air injection bed here. Check the media pH window against your result: media outside its window does not work. | $1,909.00 | Check price |
5. Twin tank softening
$1,645Two resin tanks alternating, so soft water is available during a regeneration. Size it on the hardness AFTER the neutralizer, which is higher than the raw figure because calcite adds hardness.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| DuraWater Fleck 9100SXT Twin Tank Water Softener, 48,000 Grain Alternates tanks so one regenerates while the other stays in service. | $1,590.00 | Check price |
| Diamond Crystal Bright and Soft Water Softener Salt Pellets, 50 lb Higher purity pellets, and at this salt throughput the residue difference is worth having. | $34.95 | Check price |
| Morton Water Softener Cleanser Routine resin cleaning, not an occasional repair. | $20.38 | Check price |
6. Monitored ultraviolet, last
$1,217A monitored unit reports lamp output rather than only lamp hours, which is the difference between knowing the dose is being delivered and assuming it.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| VIQUA VH200-F10 UV Whole House Water Filter System, 9 GPM Stainless chamber, sized on peak flow rather than on household size. | $980.00 | Check price |
| VIQUA S810RL Replacement UV Lamp A spare lamp. Replace annually on a date, because output falls while the lamp still lights. | $150.00 | Check price |
| VIQUA 602733 Quartz Sleeve A spare quartz sleeve. A scaled sleeve blocks the light while every indicator reads normal. | $87.00 | Check price |
7. Drinking water and monitoring
$596Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap for dissolved contaminants, matched to a certified NSF/ANSI 58 claim from the laboratory result rather than bought on faith.
| Item | Price | Buy |
|---|---|---|
| APEC Water RO-90 5 Stage Under Sink Reverse Osmosis System, 90 GPD A 90 GPD membrane, which matters on a cold well where output falls with temperature. | $219.99 | Check price |

That is the sum of all six systems, which nobody buys. It is here so the ladders can be compared honestly. Pick the one ladder that matches your water source and the one tier that matches your measured result.
Frequently asked questions
Which system should I start with?
Start with the starter system on whichever ladder matches your water source, and treat its test kit as the actual first purchase. The complete and premium systems add equipment on top of the same foundation rather than replacing it, so nothing bought at the starter level is wasted when you step up.
Do I need everything on the list?
No, and each system page has a section saying what to skip. The most commonly unnecessary purchases are a softener on water under about 7 grains per gallon, an ultraviolet system on a well that has never tested positive for bacteria, and an acid neutralizer on water whose pH is already in the 6.5 to 8.5 range.
Why does the order of equipment matter?
Because each stage protects the next. Sediment comes out before anything finer sees it, oxidation happens before a softener so the resin never meets raw iron, and ultraviolet goes last because published manufacturer limits require iron below 0.3 mg/L and manganese below 0.05 for it to deliver its rated dose at all.
Are these totals installed prices?
No, they are equipment only. Plumbing labor, a drain line, an electrical outlet and any permit are extra, and they vary enormously by region and by how accessible the main line is. Installed cost estimating is a separate question that HouseProjectCalc covers rather than this site.
What if my water has a problem none of these cover?
Then the answer is a licensed water treatment professional working from your laboratory result rather than a boxed system. That is particularly true for bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic and PFAS, which are invisible and tasteless, are governed by legal limits, and need equipment matched to a certified result and verified after installation.

Researched, not professional advice. This page is compiled from published standards, regulatory limits, manufacturer specifications and owner-review consensus, not hands-on testing. Nothing here diagnoses a water problem or says any product makes water safe to drink. Figures described as a rule of thumb are water treatment trade convention rather than published standards, and they are labeled that way wherever they appear. Test your water before you buy equipment: on city water start with the Consumer Confidence Report your utility publishes each year, and on a private well only a certified laboratory test tells you what you have. Bacteria, nitrate, lead, arsenic and PFAS are not do it yourself topics, they are invisible and tasteless, and they need a laboratory and usually a licensed professional rather than a product. Remember that a certification covers a specific claim under a specific standard, so "NSF certified" with no number attached tells you very little.
